Regardless of how you decide to fill your homemade sandwiches, it should never be bland, today’s recipe is definitely not on the bland side, it is delicious and my eldest who doesn’t like leafy veggies requested to have this sandwich in her lunch box.

It is so versatile and can be made to suit your dietary needs. It can be made vegan or vegetarian. The most important ingredient in California sandwiches is avocado and unfortunately, it can’t be substituted. Every other ingredient can be subbed to suit individual needs.

Lastly, this is a delicious California club sandwich recipe and probably one of the best you will ever make. Ultimate turkey sandwich with avocado!

    Types of sandwiches

There are different types of sandwiches, most times the type of filling used is what makes it unique. Sandwiches can be served warm, hot, or cold.

Meaty sandwiches: these types of sandwiches are filled with any deli meat, pulled, or slow-cooked meat of choice. It is often complemented with the vegetables like sliced onions, tomatoes, and lettuce.

Thinly sliced deli ham (you can use any from breaded ham, smoked ham, honey roast, cured and many more)

Turkey: smoked turkey or honey roasted are common types here in the UK

Seafood: tuna is commonly used but its not limited to that only, you can have prawn sandwich or sardine sandwich.

Beef: top side roast, pastrami, corned beef, ox tongue etc.

Veggie sandwiches: chickpeas, any type of fresh vegetables or eggs if vegetarian

Let's talk about the sandwich spread

California sandwich uses mayonnaise as the spread but you can definitely use any other spread of choice like butter, hummus, or pesto.

What you need to make California club sandwich

Bread: you will need a good sandwich bread, brown, white, malt or seeded bread works a treat here

Ripe avocado: this ingredient is why the recipe is named California sandwich, make sure that you use ripe avocado that is firm but soft when bitten into.

    Fresh salad tomatoes

    Romaine lettuce

    Watercress micro salad

Mayonnaise seasoned with onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt to taste. Alternatively, use my homemade sweet chilli mayo as the spread.

    Deli turkey

Crispy cooked bacon: this can be homemade or store-bought

the ingredients needed to make sandwich.

How to make a California club sandwich

Making your own California sandwich at home has never been easy, let’s do it!

Gather your ingredients: nothing more frustrating in the kitchen than looking for an ingredient in the middle of cooking. Get all the ingredients you will be using within reach for convenience.

Make the sandwich spread: to a small mixing bowl, add mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper and mix to combine.

Toast the bread: this is important to avoid soggy sandwich.

Assemble the sandwich: place the 2 slices of bread on a worktop and spread one side of the bread slices with mayonnaise then top with turkey slices, romaine lettuce, micro salad, crispy bacon, avocado slices, tomatoes more turkey slices. Finish off by placing the other side of the second slice of bread on the sandwich.

Now onto the tricky part, cut the sandwich into two or four triangles with a serrated knife and serve. To make the job easier, secure the sandwich with toothpicks or a cocktail stick.

PS: sandwiches can be served with chips or crisp like we say in Britain. It can also be served with soups or french fries.

the process shot of making club sandwich.

    Can I make this ahead

Yes, you can make this sandwich 12 hours in advance. The bacon can also be made ahead and kept in the fridge for up to 3 days until needed. for best result when feeding these to a crowd, keep the ingredients fresh.

If you own an air fryer then you definitely want to cook your bacon in it.

Can I make this into club sandwich

Yes, you can. Club sandwiches are mostly made with three slices of bread instead of two. Although, that was not the intention for club sandwich when it was created. A club sandwich is actually an acronym for

    C - chicken

    L – lettuce

    U – under

    B – bacon

Basically, if any of your homemade sandwiches contains any of these ingredients, then it is a club sandwich, you know just like BLT. You may also know it as a clubhouse sandwich.
